Multiple regions across China have announced plans to adopt artificial intelligence (AI)-based patrol and monitoring systems to capture cheating behaviors during the coming annual gaokao, or national college entrance examinations in June.
Regions including East China’s Jiangxi Province, Central China’s Hubei Province, and Yangjiang city in South China’s Guangdong Province have announced the use of AI real-time patrol system to maintain the disciplines of the examination rooms, The Paper reported on Tuesday.
The education and examination authority of Jiangxi, for example, has announced that the province will adopt AI-powered real-time monitoring in exam halls, continuously overseeing and analyzing abnormal behaviors during exams.
After the exams, the surveillance footage across the province will be reviewed. Any violations or misconduct confirmed through the reviews will be dealt with strictly in accordance with relevant regulations.
The education and examination center of Ganzhou city in Jiangxi recently released an open letter informing students taking the gaokao this year that all the exam rooms across the city will adopt AI-powered real-time patrolling system and any abnormal behavior or violations by candidates will be instantly captured by the AI surveillance systems and promptly addressed by the on-site staff.
In Hubei, the provincial education and examination authority announced on May 21 that in addition to identity verification, intelligent security screening and manual screening for entry into the gaokao examination halls, the exam room will be monitored by manual invigilation, video surveillance, and patrolling inspections this year, Jimu News reported.
Meanwhile, the province will fully implement real-time AI monitoring in exam rooms. Various forms of exam misconduct – such as whispering, looking around, peeking at others’ answer sheets, answering early, delaying responses, or bringing or using prohibited items – will be detected and alerted in real time using AI technology. Any violations confirmed by the exam site will face corresponding penalties, according to Jimu News.
In Yangjiang, Guangdong, the 15 gaokao examination sites across the city will adopt a monitoring system powered by AI behavior recognition algorithms and big data technology, which can promptly detect and issue warnings against violations and disciplinary offenses during the examination process, according to a report by the local television station.
This AI patrolling system captures activity through cameras and uses algorithmic matching to monitor and analyze the behavior of both invigilators and examinees in real time. If cheating, plagiarism, or any other abnormal behavior is detected, it will immediately trigger an alert.
The AI algorithm can automatically match real-time footage captured through classroom cameras against 40 models of abnormal behavior. Even subtle gestures or the passing of objects between examinees can be detected, which triggers an alert within 0.5 seconds at the monitoring terminal and highlights the details for manual review by invigilators. In addition to real-time monitoring, the system also supports post-exam intelligent search, data analysis, and monitoring of invigilation compliance, according to the report by the local television station.
