Apple Inc and Quanta Computer, a Taiwan-based manufacturer that produces Apple products, said they are investigating alleged labor malpractice at its facility in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality claimed by a Hong Kong-based human rights group.
"We are urgently investigating the report in September that student interns are working overtime and night shifts. We have zero tolerance for failure to comply with our standards and we ensure swift action and appropriate remediation if we discover code violations," Apple said in a statement sent to the Global Times.?
The comments come as an October 23 report by a Hong Kong-based human rights group named SACOM that claims Quanta Computer? - one of Apple's key suppliers - were employing high school students to assemble Apple Watch units in its factory in Chongqing in the summer.
"Quanta always follows customer's rigorous standards of supplier code of conduct, and we do not engage in any internship programs with schools. Currently, we're working closely with customer on the investigation," Quanta said in a statement sent to the Global Times.??
According to a source close to the matter, Quanta does not currently produce the product which has brought forward the alleged accusations and there were no students working on Apple production prior to September at Quanta Chongqing.
